Hi all, Matt Bidstrup here. I am the founder of The Steel Road. We recently hit a really awesome milestone that feels like a big deal. After about 5 months of active newsletter writing we have reached 1,000 subscribers!
I’m so thankful to all who subscribe and give us feedback on the newsletter. It has been a dream come true to be able to talk about successful businesses every single day.
If you want to help us continue to grow the newsletter there are 2 things you can do to help.

Since we hit 1,000 subscribers this week, we thought it would be great to do a “best of” list to help new subscribers find some of the recent articles we have published.
Without further adieu, the best of The Steel Road:
Best of the early days
Most readers probably haven’t noticed, but this newsletter originally started by talking about rental companies that rented unconventional assets. It was called OGSTR, for OG short term rentals. We showed cool AirBNBs, random rental companies, etc.
The best one was the first one, a review of a business that rented portable hot tubs in New York.
Hot tub cash machine 🛀
When I first came across Steve Nadrimia’s story, I almost quit my job to start doing this in Utah. If you want the full story directly from the horse’s mouth, check out this episode on The Side Hustle Show with Nick Loper. Stick with me and I’ll give you the breakdown.
Best Idea
We’ve gone through tons of ideas on this newsletter. Some have been more fleshed out and realistic than others. Here’s a list of every single idea:
It actually took a really long time to put this list together. You better appreciate it and click on a few of those links.
The best idea is tough to pin down. If I were 18 years old and looking to start all over knowing what I know now, this is the idea I would choose.
Cool toys that pay for themselves
Before we get started with today’s newsletter, answer this poll question! If you have additional comments let me know below!
The moat on this one is really cool because it takes some skill to be able to fly this well. The drone photography industry is growing like crazy and it has a pretty low startup cost(<$1,500).
Best Resource
Again, this is hard to pin down because we’ve covered so many great topics in this newsletter. Some lessons are incredibly important to learn in order to be a successful entrepreneur.
I truly believe that more young entrepreneurs need to stop trying to catch lighting in a bottle and instead try and install a lightbulb.
In other words don’t try and become a billionaire overnight.
Be a Donkey, not a Unicorn
Until 1901, unicorns were extinct on planet earth. But then something miraculous happened. 10 different steel companies merged together to become the US Steel Corporation, with a value of 1.4 billion dollars. Just like that, a unicorn was born. A unicorn is a company that is valued at over 1 billion dollars.
Thanks again for being one of our awesome subscribers. If there is any content you would like to see from us, be sure to let us know!
That’s all for today,
-Matt Bidstrup
Hi Matt and Team, congrats on hitting 1,000 subscribers! That’s a huge milestone. I don’t even remember how I discovered your newsletter but the first one I read was on John Linford, and I’ve loved the articles ever since. I’m sure there’s lots of lesser known side hustles out there that are waiting to be written about and I’m so so excited for pieces that you’ll be writing in the future!
