My brother sent me this picture of a portable ax throwing business from his college graduation party, and I thought it was pretty sweet.
Just like our last article about portable hot tubs this isn’t a sexy AirBNB on the beach, but a more blue collar money printer. 🎰💸💸
Let’s chop it up! 🪓
AX THROWING AS AN INDUSTRY
Google Trends shows us Ax Throwing’s rise to fame. Around 2016 it started to pick up steam as an industry, reaching a peak in February 2020.
Good old Uncle COVID kinda wrecked things, but we’re back on track for pre covid trends.
HOW MOBILE AX THROWING WORKS
Customer calls and says “Hey I’m throwing a bachelor party at a park. Come put up your Mobile Ax Throwing stand so all the boys can feel like Vikings.”
You respond “Will do, that will be $500 for two hours”.
Bada bing bada boom.🎰💸💸
The OG STR Playbook
Set up a Facebook Marketplace listing. Promote it on local buy/sell groups. If there are other forms of classifieds in your area use those too. (craigslist)
Do everything you can to get that first booking. Get a deposit of $250 and use that to put together your basic build.
Use 2x4s from Home Depot and this roll of hardware cloth to set up your stalls.
Rent a truck from Home Depot to deliver your sweet new set up
Get a vinyl banner made with your business name and phone number. Hang this up on your stalls so everyone at the event sees they can book with you again.
Buy some axes.
After 2-3 rentals you should have enough to buy your own trailer and do a more permanent build.
Park your trailer on the side of a busy road with a big ol’ banner. No sissy google ads here. Good old redneck marketing.
I won’t tell you how to live your life but this could work really well with a little sweat equity and maybe $500.
Let’s see how it ranks on the OG STR scales
Startup cost: $0-$500
Sweat Equity: high
Seasonality: Pretty summer heavy
UNIQUE AIRBNB OF THE WEEK
Lakeside Airbnbs are pretty common, but this one is literally on the lake.
I mean look at that wraparound porch. It’s like a tree house but right on the water too.
While the setting is pretty much perfect, the inside is a little underwhelming. It seems pretty dated, and the pictures aren’t taken very well.
Some paint on the walls with some updated furniture would work wonders.
Seriously? With the mirror selfie?
