Here at The Steel Road we’ve followed some interesting trends and business ideas over the past few months. Generally on Mondays we publish a case study from a successful non-tech business. Here are some of the best ones from recent weeks!
If you are reading this and haven’t subscribed, you probably oughta.
This week we found details on a pressure washing business located in Westchester, New York.
Let’s dive into Presh Clean!
The founder of Presh Clean is very active on Twitter, and often posts specifics on how business is going.
Last Friday he claims that he did $2,400 in revenue, and this is what his day looked like:
8am: Estimate at a house in his neighborhood
8:30am: Job #1, small house wash with some patios and fences. Left a sign out front. Finished around 10:30am
11am: Lunch
11:45am Job #2, giant house soft wash on roof and exterior. Finish around 2:30pm.
3pm: Beer with a friend
4pm: Estimate a 6 floor parking garage that his Virtual Assistant(VA) booked for him.
4:45pm Send out estimates
All that for $2,400. If we had to guess he’s operating at about a 30% profit margin considering all the gas, maintenance on equipment, ladders, insurance, etc.
$2,400 * .30 = $720
Not bad for a days work.
$720 per day * 15 days per month = $10,800
$10,800 * 12 = $129,600 per year.
This is a really solid business. Obviously it has taken time to get to this point. Julius is right on the edge of being able to hire a full time washer so he can shift his entire focus to estimating and growing the business.
Here are a few things we like about this business:
There’s a great focus on new customers. He’s being very proactive about giving estimates and finding new business. As anyone in sales knows, you have to keep the pipeline full!
Multiple revenue streams have been stacked over time.
pressure washing
soft washing
gutter cleaning
window cleaning
commercial cleaning
Christmas light installation to stay busy during the slower winter months
Builds relationships with property managers and landlords so he can sell once and service multiple houses.
Pressure washing is the poster child of non-tech businesses. Everyone talks about how easy it is to get started, but it’s just like anything else. It’s going to take a lot of work and optimization.
But by being willing to work hard and do something different than everyone else, Julius has built a business worth about $250,000 in the past 3 years. He could exit now and have some great capital to start buying real estate, build another business, or start a new career.
