Spring is here, and that brings tons of great opportunities to non-tech businesses.
The snow is melting and it’s time for everyone to spruce up their house. Spring cleaning is in full effect.
Every house in the United States has around 10-15 windows in it. And guess what? Everyone hates washing their windows!
Everyone has them, nobody wants to clean them.
High Total Addressable Market(TAM), low competition.
How do you go about capturing that TAM?
Let’s take a look at our marketing funnel from last week.
Now, I’m assuming you are trying to start this business without spending thousands of dollars on marketing, so we’re going the budget route.
On Thursday evening pass out flyers advertising your service and directing people to your website. ($20)
Hits awareness, interest, and consideration
After 2-3 days knock on every door that received a flyer, help them evaluate your service and guide them to a decision.
Evaluation, decision, transaction
Offer a discount if you can put a yard sign up for 2 weeks.
Loyalty, advocacy
As far as cleaning the windows, that’s the easy part.
Once you have some appointments booked, go to Home Depot and buy a window cleaning kit. You can get a telescoping one for around $100 so you can reach second story windows without a ladder.
Do some practice cleans on your own home, your car, and your neighbor’s house.
It’s not terribly difficult, but it does take some practice. There are lots of YouTube videos and tutorials online for excellent finishes.
And remember, it may not have been your goal to be a window washer when you grow up. But this is how you get good at business. Like our friend Nick Huber said:
“More and more opportunities come up as you get better at business. My story is no different, we started by hauling boxes with cargo vans and ten years later we’re buying millions of dollars of self storage.”
Just dream with me for a second.
Through your marketing efforts you can book 30 windows per day.
30 windows = 3 homes
2 hours per home * 3 homes = 6 hours
30 windows * $25 per window = $750 per day
If you spend 3 days a week cleaning windows, and 2 days a week marketing then you are looking at some great revenue.
$750 * 3 = $2,250 per week
$2,250 * 4.2 weeks per month = $9,450
If you take $1,000 off for gas and marketing materials, you are still making $8,450 a month.
$8,450 * 12 = $101,400
Just like that you are doing $101,400 a year in profit from window cleaning. And that’s assuming you don’t grow the business to add extra crews, implement recurring revenue, and add extra business stacks.
Here’s to another day of getting better at business!
