I just channeled my inner Macklemore & bought a scooter.
Last year I visited San Francisco, and while exploring downtown I kept seeing these scooters with tourists zipping all over the place.
Then I went to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, and the same thing happened. Scooter rentals all over the place in touristy areas.
Now Iām that cool guy zipping around on a scooter.
If your city is anything like mine, itās been flooded with electric scooters all over downtown.
With franchising opportunities available, it seems like a good bet. But thatās the easy way out and here at the OG STR weāre not about that.
The electric revolution may be happening, but I still think thereās a market for these efficient gas scooters as a rental.
Hereās what we would do:
Every fall here in Utah, the leaves change and the mountains are the place to be. Thereās a loop everyone calls The Alpine Loop, and itās an amazing drive.
I bought my scooter for $800, and so far itās reliable, fun, easy to drive, and low maintenance.
Over the summer Iād buy 5-7 of them, and set up a simple rental experience at the beginning of the loop.
During the 2 weeks leading up to the beginning of fall Iād throw up a sign on the side of the road advertising my rental experience.
With 5 scooters at $50 per rental thatās $250 a day. But each scooter is going to rent out multiple times a day, so if you can manage 15 rentals 5 days a week, thatās $3,750 in revenue weekly.Ā
The drive is prettiest for about 5 weeks from October to November, so you could clear almost $20,000 in a monthās time. Then, you can offload the motorcycles for around $3,000 and youāre in the clear.
*Disclaimer: Obviously, youād need some insurance, and it would be pretty complicated to make sure you arenāt stuck with any liability.
Letās check the OG STR meters to see how it stacks up.
Startup costs: $4,000-$5,000
Sweat equity: medium
Seasonality: In the right location, could be year round.
Unique Airbnb of the week
A friend sent me this double decker bus converted into a STR. I have to say, itās pretty awesome!
Located on some farmland in Caldwell, Idaho, the hosts claim itās the only double decker airbnb in the United States.
Itās definitely a novelty, but they really went above and beyond to make it beautiful on the inside.
The hosts really knocked it out of the park with this one!
